as the full caption to this picture reveals, the man is photographed while resting at his ‘cotton wagon before returning to work in the field. he has been picking all day’. the hand blocks the subject’s mouth and speaks of a life on the land. the replacement of mouth by hand is also symbolic of an overriding emphasis in lange’s photography on physical gestures. the man is in fact hiding his bad teeth from the camera. [p. 104]
